Howard Hughes, the American Billionaire and Hollywood producer showed some
strange behaviour during his lifetime.
He once dated some of the most beautiful women in the world including Elizabeth
Taylor, Ginger Rogers, Ava Gardner and Lana Turner but during the last 15
years of his life he became a total recluse.
When he married his second wife he insisted that they have separate bedrooms
and even separate refigerators.
He became obsessed with hygiene and never allowed anyone else to touch his
food, not even his wife.
His doctor was only allowed to examine him from the other side of the room.
After he divorced his wife, Hughes lived in a bungalow in the desert near
to Las Vegas and hired mormons to be his bodyguards to protect him from contamination.
He was so terrified of germs that the few visitors he had were forced to stand
in chalk drawn square outside the house before being allowed near the front
door.
Hughes would never touch anything without first wrapping his hands in paper
tissue.
He also stored all of his own urine in metal containers, labelling and dating
each one of them.
Hughes then began living in a succession of anonymous hotel rooms when his
desert retreat became too public, moving secretly in the dead of night strapped
to a stretcher.
The windows of his hotel rooms were always darkened with tape and the only
furniture he owned was a bed, a chair and movie equipment on which he watched
the film 'Ice Station Zebra' starring Rock Hudson, 150 times.
Sometimes for days on end Hughes would eat only ice cream, staying with one
flavour until all the parlours in the area ran out.
Only twice in ten years did he allow a barber to trim his hair and a manicurist
to attend his nails. His beard hung down to his waist.
He only ever met three people between 1961 and his death in 1976.
